Focus Not Obscured (Minimum)

Summary:
WCAG 2.4.11, "Focus Not Obscured (Minimum)," aims to ensure that when an element receives keyboard focus, it remains visible and not obscured by other content. This guideline is crucial for keyboard users, particularly those with visual impairments, as it ensures they can always see where they are on the page.

What:
The criterion requires that when an element gains focus, it should not be obscured by other content on the page.

Why:
Visible focus is essential for users navigating via keyboard. If the focus is obscured by other content, it can disorient users, making navigation difficult and frustrating.

How to Comply:

  • Websites: Design pages so that pop-ups, dialog boxes, or other content do not cover or hide focused elements.
  • Mobile Apps and Software Applications: Ensure that when elements gain focus, they remain visible and are not obscured by other in-app elements.

Exceptions:

  • User-initiated Display: When the obscuring of the focus is initiated by the user's action, it may not be covered by this criterion.
  • Transient Effects: Temporary effects that might obscure focus, such as brief animations, are generally not considered a violation if they are short-lived.
